I totally agree. Still waiting for life to catch up to Neuromancer...

I was thinking more along the lines of Effinger's When Gravity Fails - moddies vs. daddies, personality-overriding modules versus supplemental skills chip. I guess I want the most compatible slot, so I can take my pick!

A victorious breakthough in neurotechnology (as opposed to one in CS) seems required.

Justin, you seem to assume that your meat-self will have absolute control over your chip-self.

But once you pop in that first chip, will it not help determine what the next chip is...?

... or maybe you'll pop in a chip which strongly inclines you to never popping that one out again...

there's some gnarly issues of identity with the cerebral implant

but, you silly boy, you think the tech always serves you, and not you it

beware...

Human machine potential, justin?

I think our brains sure beat any $39.95 SanDisk Flash memory from a Walmart. I trust mother nature much more than technology.

Remember what Pirsig said in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintainance ?

Can our Technology supersceed our Humanity? Has Technology solved more problems for us, or rather created many more for mankind?

These are things to think about . . especially on the drive to work.

(or in my case, since I just broke my ankle in a car wreck, sitting in the passenger seat)

Have you thought of corporate driven chips? The equivalent of pop-ups would be terrifying, and what about viruses? A mood virus woudlcause both suicide, and then used as the perfect weapon, or complete submission. Imagine high school kids trying to infect their peers with the sex-mood virus.
No, too tragic.
But tantalizing nevertheless.

Yeah, slot is surely more flexible than a one chip implated for good. This way you can always replace and upgrade the card if there's a need.

Interesting, a friend of mine implemented a tracking device in his daughter's arm to know where she is. He says it's for finding her in case of a kindnap, but I think he just wants to know where she is all the time. Scarry, huh ?
